Chapter 299 It Has Begun
At the break of the next day, when the fog was thick and the air damp, the huge gate opened and thousands of Ashbourne soldiers were marching into the field.
Two months of continuous battles had brought the end to almost every grass on the field. Some areas had scorched craters caused by trebuchets.
Their armours clinked as they marched. After thousands of infantry and archers had exited the entrance, horses neighed and Lambert's cavalry followed.
The next unit after Lambert's cavalry were the paladins, the most powerful unit, a unit made of sacred-ranked knights!
One had to know that Asher's generals were all at the sacred rank, except for Sapphira who was already a half a step into the imperial rank.
Asher and Sapphira were the only saints in the county.
Asher, clad in his golden armour, rode ahead of the paladins.
Hundreds of Temple Servants flew above them, led by the Sapphira. This imposing array of Asher's army made Duke Mormont and Archduke Nubis raise an eyebrow.
Both dukes, in the comfort of their magnificent castles, stared at the hovering portal created by a special type of mage known as The Messengers.
There were mages with spatial elements. It allowed them to open portals, transporting them across long distances or even opening more portals.
They were not like other mages that had mastered different offensive or defensive spells as their only focus was to meet the needs of their lords.
These messengers were hidden under cloaking spells, watching the march. Through the portals opened beside them, the dukes could see the Ashbourne troops.
In Mormont castle, Duke Ohad Mormont sat on his throne, his eyes slightly narrowed as he beheld the elite troops marching across the battlefront, toward the forest.
Seated on the long table below his throne were his two sons and only daughter along with Mary.
None of them, not even Mary could believe these troops were from the wastelands!
On the other hand, Archduke Nubis frowned deeply.
"It's a good thing you had Count Wyvern send one of his wyverns. The Count of the wastelands is a shrewd man who has deceived other noble houses all this while. To have built such an army, he already had plans of starting a war."
Vladimir Nubis, Archduke Nubis first son and a cripple, spoke softly yet venomously. Although detested by his father for being a cripple and living in the shadows of his younger brother, he still had his value.
"Once the wyvern appears. This battle will be over."
Archduke Nubis declared.
While the dukes watched, Asher's troops stopped 300 yards away from the forest and began to set up their formation.
As the Grand Aegis soldiers went into position, the sound of thousands of heavy footsteps, that of men and of horses fell into their ears.
In no time, barbarians emerged from the forest, marked with red paint, some with blue, some with black.
With various tattoos on their bodies and different kinds of weapons, they flooded out of the forest like a tide of ants!
Cain riding a black tiger chuckled at the ridiculous sight of his foes. Compared to their numbers, the Ashbourne soldiers looked pitiful and what made it even worse was the stupid idea to leave their walls.
Seeing them hundreds of meters away, standing tall with their tower shields and flowing cloaks, Cain could only imagine how Asher had emptied Tiberias treasury to equip his army.
He ground his teeth.
The growl of a tiger made him turn.
It was his father, Count Ira and Enos.
His father rode a large black tiger with white stripes while Enos rode a muscular horse said to be the fastest in all of the Wildlands.
"There he is." Count William said, looking at Asher and his men far behind the main Ashbourne army.
"Send word. Release my son Levi and I will consider sparing your lives and that of your family. Don't and this county will burn."
Cain quickly sent an envoy who rode towards the Ashbourne army only for an arrow crackling with lightning to strike the horse.
The impact sent the envoy flying through the air and opening holes as he slammed across the land a couple of times.
"Fire!"
The Markswomen and the Goshen archers let go of their drawn bows, releasing armour piercing arrows into the fog covered sky.
These arrows, however, either glowed with blue lightning or orange flames as they reached their peak and fell like rain droplets.
"Charge!"
Enos roared as his men died like flies. The explosive effects of the arrows also blew those around away, causing chaos.
"Kill!"
The barbarians on horse backs raised their khopesh.
Rumble!
They charged forth, kicking up dirt. In great numbers, they raced towards the Ashbourne soldiers.
More volleys of arrows fell from the sky like an endless rain, reaping hundreds of lives and that of their horses.
"Nock, lift, aim…"
Paul stretched his bow to the limit. "... Fire!"
Thwack! Thwack!
Their bowstrings made loud sounds while the arrows flew into the ranks of their enemies, hitting som off their horses.
Meanwhile, Paul's three arrows danced in the battlefield, killing without a stop until the arrows were caught by a giant barbarian.
They actually got stuck in his tough skin.
"Here they come. Shields!"
Alec bellowed and the heavy infantry slammed their shields into the ground before aiming their long spears at the incoming cavalry.
"Brace yourselves!"
Alec, right in the heart of the wall looked at the left and right while he gave orders. "Strengthen your feet, concentrate on your enemies!"
He peered through the narrow gap in the shield wall and saw the cavalry were upon them, the earth rumbled as if announcing their imminent arrival.
"Our wall do not fall, not to barbarians! Hold!!!"
His roar was the last thing as the cavalry clashed with the Grand Aegis Heavy infantry.
Their ruthless spears pierced through horses and men alike, sending blood and cries into the air.
Likewise, the khopesh of the barbarians descended like a wave.
