Chapter 79 - 79 79 Looking for Trouble
?Chapter 79: Chapter 79 Looking for Trouble? Chapter 79: Chapter 79 Looking for Trouble? Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng exchanged smiles as they heard the gossip; they couldn’t help but listen as they followed and went home.
As they walked, they discussed the information they had just heard, knowing that some people in the Inner Circle were very foresighted. It was a smart decision not to occupy the outer areas, as it didn’t expose their strength and wealth. At least for now, it left Gu Pan and the others to attack the interior without the Inner Circle acting rashly, uncertain of what awaited them.
As for Lin Feifei, Lin Mengmeng, and Yuan Jiang, Gu Pan really couldn’t comment much. The whole tea affair with Lin Mengmeng was based only on what Lin Feifei said, unverifiable; but it was true that Lin Feifei was quite stubborn and willful. Yuan Jiang wasn’t easy to evaluate either. Of course, Gu Pan and her husband weren’t very interested in these matters.
Regarding Yuan Jiang’s comment about the lack of military support and the ongoing base construction, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had also shared this with their people, preparing them mentally not to let their guard down and to maintain their tense state.
Upon returning, everyone was pleased to learn they had found a water source, recognizing water as the most crucial resource.
They also talked again about what Yuan Jiang and Lin Feifei had said, heightening their alertness as, counting the days, extreme heat was likely close at hand.
Over the next two days, the men would still venture out to scavenge or hunt in the mountains. Although the yield wasn’t great, their supplies were ample, so there was no need to worry too much, especially since there was an epidemic and safety first was paramount.
Gu Pan led the women to clean out every household’s basement, as they had filled with water and mud during the previous thaw.
She told everyone that having a basement would allow storage of vegetables, among other things, as no one knew how things would be after the epidemic.
Trust in her was natural, so everyone was stirred to tidy their basements.
Today, after Lu Ruisheng and the others had left, Gu Pan took the items from the basement out to sun them, preparing for the imminent extreme heat.
After airing the items, reflecting on her reading from the day before about fungi growth, she thought of how wood ear mushrooms didn’t need much sunlight and were quite heat-resistant. Calculating for the extreme heat, they might try growing them in the basement or on the first floor; her Space contained some mushroom blocks Zhuang Jie had purchased. She felt fortunate that she had not immediately killed Zhuang Jie, but waited until he had gathered supplies. After all, her past self struggled to survive in tight spots, while Zhuang Jie lived a more privileged life, making their preparations complement each other well.
She read that growing wood ear mushrooms required cedar wood, prompting her to think about checking the mountains for suitable wood.
She also planned to dig up some soil for planting heat-resistant vegetables, as the materials mentioned they could withstand temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius. If these were grown indoors with additional fans, it might be feasible to manage.
Air conditioning units were out of the question as they were too conspicuous, but she had plenty of ice in her Space to use for cooling the indoors.
Furthermore, a generator was always in use, which also allowed for cooking. The advantage of an independent house was its privacy.
Of course, today she planned to first scout the mountains to verify the availability of the needed wood type, and then, tomorrow, have Lu Ruisheng and the others help bring it down.
Taking a small path, she passed by Squad Leader Fang’s house and spotted a familiar figure darting by – Fang Lanlan, quick as lightning, vanishing from the doorway as soon as she saw someone.
Gu Pan found her quite interesting. If you said she was shy and timid, she could simply stay indoors, but the girl’s curiosity seemed rather large, liking to step out but disappearing super fast whenever she saw people.
She continued walking forward, intending to exit through a small door ahead. Just as she reached the corner, Yuan Jiang, dragging his suitcase, came towards her.
Though Gu Pan hadn’t planned to speak, Yuan Jiang stopped, greeted her first, “Hello, I’m really sorry about what happened on the mountain last time. I’m moving to this area now, right near you, and I hope we can look out for each other in the future.”
Gu Pan felt indifferent towards him. As long as he didn’t affect her area, it didn’t matter where he moved. A hand doesn’t strike a smiling face; his attitude was quite good, and she saw no need to be unpleasant.
So, Gu Pan said, “Let the past be the past; it wasn’t your fault. In the apocalypse, everyone survives on their own, so I wish you good luck.”
That was a sincere statement—what care was there to give at such times? Taking care of oneself was enough. Wishing someone good luck was truly the best blessing.
But Gu Pan hadn’t expected Yuan Jiang would really move out, only two days later, likely after some discussions with others.
At that moment, Lin Feifei ran up from behind Yuan Jiang, and upon seeing Gu Pan talking with Yuan Jiang, her face filled with anger, “Why is it you again?”
Gu Pan really couldn’t be bothered with her, “I’m busy—excuse me.” With that, she kept walking.
Lin Feifei blocked her, “Don’t think you can seduce my Brother Yuan Jiang just because you’re a bit capable. A woman like you, who hangs around with men, aren’t you just a ‘bro ho’?”
Those words stupefied Gu Pan, “Sister, don’t just throw around words you’ve learned. If you’re sick, swiftly take your medicine and do not frighten people.”
She certainly hadn’t expected to be smeared with such an accusation—a ‘bro ho’? Go to hell.
This person seemed to suffer from a persecution complex, reminding herself of a celebrity who was balding and quite ugly, yet his wife always suspected other female celebrities fancied her husband. Lin Feifei must be similar, though the main point was that the other couple was legally married, whereas Lin Feifei wasn’t even Yuan Jiang’s girlfriend.
Hearing Gu Pan’s words, Lin Feifei grew even more confident, “Did I strike a nerve? Can’t face it, can you? In the apocalypse, you hang around with a bunch of men all day. You know what kind of person you are…”
Before she could finish, Gu Pan raised her sleeve arrow and fired it at her head, the arrow skimming her scalp and pulling a strand of hair, “If you spew rubbish again, I can’t guarantee where the next shot will land.”
The epidemic wasn’t over yet. Even if the other person wasn’t infected now, Gu Pan wouldn’t risk any physical contact. It was a pity to lose an arrow, but Gu Pan had a deeper thought; it was partly to intimidate the people from the Inner Circle and partly to see if she could use Lin Feifei’s vulnerability to interact with the Inner Circle. Before the severe heat, they could share water resources. Although she had water in her Space, her partners didn’t—having water was still more secure.
Lin Feifei was so frightened by Gu Pan that her soul nearly flew away. After recovering, she glared fiercely at her, “How dare you treat me like this? Don’t you know who I am?”
Gu Pan responded, “Who you are is none of my business, but if you insult me, you’ll have to bear the consequences. If you provoke me again in the future, I will show no mercy.”
Lin Feifei wanted to rush over and hit Gu Pan, “I was giving you face!”
Yuan Jiang grabbed her, “Lin Feifei, can’t you calm down? Don’t you remember a word your grandfather said?”
Lin Feifei couldn’t advance, but she was resentful and yelled toward Gu Pan, “You know how to shoot arrows, right? Dare you compete with me in a match?”
